xAI SWE L5 offer data, Bay Area, early 2026

sharing what i saw from my offer earlier this year. role was SWE, roughly L5/senior equivalent (they use their own leveling terminology but this is the closest analog).

Bay Area, in-person/hybrid

Base: $200k Equity: significant RSU grant, vesting 4 years. the per-share value is private company so it's a real gamble. they quoted a recent 409A but take that with a grain of salt. Bonus: not structured as traditional bonus, some discretionary component but it wasn't formalized in the offer.

no relocation package offered initially, i had to ask. they did cover it after pushback.

total target cash is competitive with mid-level FAANG. the equity upside story is the pitch but you're taking on real startup risk. i know people who took it and people who didn't. no judgment either way.

leveling negotiation: i asked to be re-leveled up and they came back with a comp adjustment rather than a title change. that was fine for my situation but might matter to someone else.

the 409A-based equity valuation is the right place to be skeptical. private company paper is not liquid. i'd mentally haircut the equity by 60-70% until there's a real path to liquidity. the base is real though and $200k base is solid.

this matches what i heard from a contact who's there now. they said base is competitive but benefits are barebones compared to Google or Meta. 401k match was thin when they joined, not sure if that's changed.

yeah benefits were not a highlight. health coverage was decent but the 401k situation was not impressive. factor that into the TC comparison.

the director/staff level comp reportedly runs higher but i haven't seen anyone post actual numbers. if anyone has L6+ data would be useful context here.
