Does Sony Electronics actually respond to new grads or is it a black hole

newgrad_neil · 2 replies

applied to like 6 roles at Sony Electronics (San Diego) over the past two months. heard back on exactly one. is this normal? i know the market is rough but the Sony portal seems especially quiet. not sure if my applications are even being seen or if there's some ATS thing going on.

also for the one i did hear back on, recruiter sent a calendar link for a 30 min call. any advice on what to say when they ask "tell me about yourself" for a company this large and varied? like which Sony are they thinking about when they ask that

the portal black hole is real at a lot of large Japanese multinationals. Sony specifically routes through a centralized ATS and hiring manager interest has to align with recruiter bandwidth. for new grads, referrals help a lot more than cold apps. if you know anyone at any Sony division, even tangentially, that's your path.

for the call: pick a thread. don't try to speak to all of Sony. pick the division and team you applied to and tell them why that specific work interests you.

i got ghosted by Sony twice before getting a response on the third. don't read too much into silence, big corps are slow. the one callback i got came 6 weeks after i'd basically written it off.
