Agency recruiter here, placed a few people at Shopify over the years and still have contacts there. Going to give you the real picture of the phone screen stage because most of what I see online is either outdated or missing the subtext.
The Shopify recruiter phone screen is usually 30 minutes. The recruiter will introduce themselves, explain the role, and then ask you questions. In my experience the standard questions are: Walk me through your background and what's bringing you to Shopify right now. What do you know about Shopify's mission and products? Tell me about a recent project you're proud of. What are you looking for in your next role? Compensation expectations.
Pretty standard on the surface. Here's what's actually being assessed:
On question 1: They want to see a coherent narrative, not a resume recitation. Why does Shopify make sense as your next move? If you can't connect your background to what Shopify is building for merchants, that's a weak signal.
On question 2: This is a filter for genuine interest. Shopify is genuinely obsessed with their merchant mission. You should know what Shopify does for both small businesses and enterprise merchants (Shopify Plus). Mention something recent if you can. They notice.
On question 3: This is a lightweight technical/impact bar check. They want to see that you can clearly explain something you built and why it mattered.
On comp: Ask for the band upfront if they don't give it. Shopify has bands and they'll usually share them. Don't anchor too low at this stage.
The phone screen is mostly a pass/fail on communication clarity and basic fit signals. Very few people fail it on technical content. They fail it by being vague, generic, or clearly not knowing what Shopify does.
