collecting recent Shopify loop data, interviewing in 3 weeks

remote_swe_42 · 4 replies

i have a Shopify senior SWE loop coming up mid-July. backend role, distributed systems focus. recruiter said 4 rounds but i've seen reports of 5. anyone gone through a loop in the last 6 months who can share specifics?

particularly interested in: is the systems design round open-note or do they cut off browser access, what's the difficulty level of the live coding (leetcode medium, hard, or more context-driven), and is the values panel 1:1 or group?

drop whatever you have, even partial data helps.

did a Shopify backend loop in March. systems design was open-note, they told me upfront. the expectation is that you can navigate real references, not that you memorized cap theorem definitions. the test is your reasoning process and whether you can defend tradeoffs.

live coding was closer to medium-hard context problems, not algorithmic. mine was designing a rate limiter from scratch with some product constraints layered in. not a blind leetcode question.

values was two 1:1 rounds back to back, different interviewers. 45 min each.

not recent but my platform eng loop was 5 rounds. the 5th was added late, they called it a 'technical deep dive on your past project'. basically you walk them through something you built, they dig into every architectural decision you made. if you're backend/infra, pick a system with genuine complexity, not a CRUD app.

good to know. i have a distributed job scheduler i built that should give me enough to talk about. appreciate the heads up on the 5th round possibility.

one thing worth knowing: the values interviewers often come from completely different teams than the role you're interviewing for. so they're not assessing domain fit, just the culture alignment piece. calibrate your stories accordingly, they don't need technical depth from that panel.
