Retool SWE L4 offer, SF, 2026

dropping numbers because more data is better.

Role: Software Engineer (L4, equivalent to senior IC) Location: SF hybrid, 3 days/week in office expected Offer date: May 2026

Base: $195k Equity: $480k over 4 years (1-year cliff, monthly after). Series E so some liquidity risk baked in. Bonus: not standard for IC, none in offer Signing: $30k (no clawback if you stay 12+ months)

total cash year 1 at target: $225k including signing steady state year 2+: around $195k cash plus whatever the equity is worth

negotiated base up from $185k initial offer. they moved. RSU grant was fixed but recruiter confirmed they do refresh grants after year 2 based on performance.

benefit: solid health coverage, 401k with match (4%), unlimited PTO (use with discretion per manager, which means 'figure it out yourself').

for context i had a competing offer at $210k base at a larger company which helped the base negotiation.

the equity liquidity risk piece is real at this stage. 4-year vest at Series E means you're making a bet on IPO or secondary market timing. what's their last valuation? that frames the math on the $480k figure.

numbers_only

last round was at a $3.2B valuation. secondary market is thin. i modeled it conservatively at 0.5x the headline number. the base and signing were the real pull for me.

market_realist

no standard bonus for IC is annoying to see. that base has to carry more weight without the safety valve of a variable comp lever. still a solid package for Series E though.

3 days/week in SF office is not nothing. that's a real lifestyle constraint for people not already in the city. worth putting a number on commute time and cost when you're comparing to a fully remote offer at $210k.
