I've worked in-house recruiting for security companies for years and have enough PANW data points from candidates I've coached to give you a realistic picture of what the recruiter phone screen actually is.
First: the PANW recruiter screen is not a formality. I've seen candidates get screened out at this stage, and it's usually for predictable reasons.
What the recruiter is actually doing: Confirming your background matches the req (obviously) Gauging how clearly you communicate: can you explain your last role in 2 minutes without jargon? Sniffing out compensation misalignment early: they will ask your expectations Checking availability/timeline and any logistics (visa, relocation) Selling you on PANW if you're a strong candidate
Questions I consistently hear about: Walk me through your background and why you're interested in PANW specifically What drew you to security/cybersecurity? What are you looking for in your next role? What's your timeline? What are your compensation expectations?
The comp question: Answer it. Giving a range is fine. Refusing to answer or saying 'whatever the market is' annoys recruiters and delays things. Look up Levels.fyi for PANW, their bands are not a secret.
Why people get screened out: Can't articulate why PANW specifically (generic 'great company' answer) Comp expectations way above band for the level they're applying to Communication is unclear or overly technical for a non-technical recruiter Timeline doesn't work (they need 60 days, you need 2 weeks)
The recruiter screen is 20-30 minutes. Don't overcomplicate it. Just be a person who clearly explains themselves.
