OpenAI interview timeline: how long from recruiter screen to offer?

logging my experience because i saw someone else ask this and couldn't find a recent answer. this was for a research/UX function role, early 2026.

my timeline: day 0: applied via website day 12: recruiter reached out for initial screen day 14: 30-min recruiter call day 19: hiring manager screen scheduled and completed day 26: invited to full loop days 33-36: full panel (3 rounds spread across 3 days because of scheduling conflicts) day 42: debrief period / radio silence day 48: verbal offer day 56: written offer letter

so about 8 weeks total from application to verbal, a little under 6 weeks from first recruiter touch to verbal.

a few notes: the radio silence after the panel is real and feels long. my recruiter said debrief can take 1-2 weeks. mine took 6 days. stay patient, don't read into silence. they were responsive when i reached out to check in. i sent one "just following up" email and got a response within a business day. the loop itself was 5 rounds but not all in one day, unlike how some big tech companies run onsites. it was spread across roughly 2 weeks total which felt more humane. background check and paperwork added another 1.5 weeks before start date confirmed

if you're wondering whether to keep applying elsewhere while in the openai process: yes, absolutely. 8 weeks is a long time and you can't control the pace from their side.

the 6-day debrief is fast for OpenAI from what i've heard. i've had candidates tell me it stretched to 2 weeks. depends on how many interviewers are involved and how aligned the panel is. if it's going long, that's not necessarily bad. sometimes the loop is strong and they're debating level.

8 weeks is rough when you're on a 60-day clock. for anyone in an H1B transition window: make sure you communicate your timeline to the recruiter early. most companies will try to work around it if you're a strong candidate but you have to flag it, don't assume they'll notice.

did they give you feedback after any of the rounds or just at the end?

almost nothing during the process. at the verbal offer stage my recruiter gave me a sentence or two of summary feedback ('panel was strong, especially on the domain expertise sections'). that was it. don't expect transparency on where you stood round by round.

this matches what a friend told me. the scheduling piece is the friction. 5 rounds across 2 weeks sounds flexible but it also means your prep has to stay sharp for a longer window. hard to stay in peak practice mode for 2 weeks straight.
