Mistral AI offer data: Senior Research Engineer, Paris, 2026

posting what I saw so others can calibrate.

Role: Senior Research Engineer Location: Paris, France (on-site) Date: early 2026

Offer breakdown: Base: ~120k EUR Equity: meaningful BSPCE grant, 4-year vest with 1-year cliff. I was told this is in the mid-to-high range for European AI startups at their stage, but BSPCE is French-specific and the value is very illiquid right now. Benefits: standard French employment (mutuelle, meal vouchers, RTT days) Signing bonus: none mentioned

For context, this is competitive for Paris senior roles but well below Bay Area equivalents. They seem to know it and lean on the equity and research exposure story pretty hard. If you're optimizing for raw cash, this probably isn't the move unless you believe the equity story. If you're optimizing for being close to frontier model work at a lab that's punching above its size, that's a different calculation.

US-remote offers might look different, I only have Paris data.

BSPCE is the French version of stock options, for anyone unfamiliar. the tax treatment is actually reasonably favorable compared to US NSOs if you hold long enough. but illiquidity risk at this stage is real. the question is how you're pricing a Series B valuation in this market.

the Paris-vs-SF delta here is stark. but Mistral's research team is legitimately strong and that has career value that doesn't show up in the salary line. harder to model, though.

"career value" is how companies justify underpaying you. maybe true here, maybe cope. worth negotiating the base anyway, they're funded.

thanks for sharing this. hard to find real numbers for EU AI labs and it helps a lot for calibration when you're deciding whether to go through a loop at all.
