Title and Summary Principal Architect - Global Payments Network Overview

Mastercard's Network Products team is responsible for the architecture and evolution of capabilities that support our Switching and Network Services platforms.

The Product Architecture team partners closely with Product Management, Engineering, and Regional Solution teams to define architectural direction, evaluate new capabilities, and ensure solutions can scale effectively as business and technology needs evolve.

We are looking for an experienced architect who enjoys solving complex system design challenges, working across organizational boundaries, and driving architectural decisions for large-scale distributed platforms. This is an Individual Contributor role that requires deep technical expertise, strong communication skills, and the ability to influence without direct authority.

Role

As a Principal Architect - Global Payments Platform, you will be responsible for defining and evolving the architecture of products and services that support Mastercard's network platforms.

You will work closely with Product Managers, Engineering teams, Service Architects, and business stakeholders to translate business requirements into scalable architectural solutions. You will evaluate design alternatives, establish architecture principles, support technical decision-making, and help ensure implementations align with the intended architectural vision.

This role is well suited for someone who enjoys thinking at a systems level, navigating ambiguity, and balancing short-term delivery needs with long-term platform sustainability.

Responsibilities • Define and evolve end-to-end product architectures for globally distributed, enterprise-scale platforms. • Partner with Product Managers, Business Stakeholders, and Engineering Leaders to shape product strategy and technical direction. • Evaluate new product ideas and capabilities for technical feasibility, scalability, resiliency, operability, and long-term sustainability. • Lead architecture discussions and facilitate consensus across multiple engineering and product teams. • Define architectural principles and standards that promote scalability, domain ownership, resilience, security, and maintainability. • Produce high-quality architecture artifacts, including system designs, architectural decision records, data flows, and integration patterns. • Analyze architectural trade-offs and communicate design rationale to technical, business, and executive audiences. • Ensure solutions align with modern architectural approaches such as Domain-Driven Design, Event-Driven Architecture, Distributed Systems, and Cloud-Native principles. • Partner closely with Engineering teams to ensure execution aligns with architectural vision and agreed design principles. • Support strategic customer, regional, and market initiatives by providing architectural leadership and consultation. • Identify opportunities to modernize, simplify, and optimize existing platforms and services.

All About You Required Qualifications • Demonstrated experience architecting and designing large-scale distributed systems operating in high-throughput, low-latency environments. • Strong expertise in software architecture, system design, and enterprise application architecture. • Proven ownership of architecture decisions, including evaluating alternatives, assessing trade-offs, and driving alignment across stakeholders. • Experience designing systems using: • Domain-Driven Design (DDD) • Event-Driven Architecture • Microservices Architecture • Cloud-Native Design Principles • API-First Architectures • Eventual Consistency Patterns • Strong understanding of scalability, resiliency, observability, security, and performance engineering. • Experience with cloud platforms, distributed messaging systems, and modern persistence technologies. • Ability to clearly communicate complex architectural concepts through diagrams, documentation, and presentations. • Excellent communication, collaboration, influence, and stakeholder management skills. • Strong analytical thinking, sound judgment, and problem-solving capabilities.

Preferred Qualifications • Experience within payments, financial services, fintech, switching, or transaction processing environments. • Experience designing systems that support large transaction volumes and mission-critical business operations. • Exposure to technologies such as Kafka, NATS, gRPC, REST, SQL and NoSQL databases, caching platforms, monitoring and observability solutions, and modern cloud ecosystems. • Knowledge of cryptography, authentication and authorization frameworks, and secure distributed systems. • Exposure to AI/ML and LLM-enabled architectures.
