Did the full KTD (Kroger Technology and Digital) loop for a senior SWE role back in February 2026, and system design was the part I was most nervous about. Spoiler: it was fine, but the flavor is specific to retail infrastructure, so generic prep didn't quite fit.
The system design round was 45 minutes with two engineers and a tech lead. They gave me a classic distributed-systems prompt but rooted in Kroger's world: something like "design a real-time inventory sync system across 2,800 stores." Not a trick question. They wanted to see if you understood eventual consistency, queuing, and the scale implications of physical retail (stores go offline, connectivity is spotty, reconciliation is real).
What they cared about: Clarifying requirements before diving in. I asked about SLA for staleness, read vs. write ratio, and whether mobile POS needed to be in scope. They seemed to like that. Practical trade-offs. Kafka vs. polling. Event sourcing vs. state sync. They pushed back on my first design and wanted to hear me reason through it, not just pivot to what they suggested. Failure modes. What happens if a store loses connectivity for 20 minutes? That's a real Kroger problem. I talked about local write queues and idempotent reconciliation and that landed well.
What they didn't harp on: Exact API surface area. We got to it but it wasn't the focus. LeetCode-style micro-optimization. This is not FAANG. Nobody asked me to prove I know B-trees from memory.
Level calibration for senior at KTD seemed to land somewhere around L4/L5 in big-tech parlance. Staff or principal roles might go deeper into multi-system architecture but I can't confirm that.
One thing I'll say: the interviewers were pretty conversational and seemed to actually use the systems they were designing around. More than some FAANG panels where you feel like you're talking to someone who has only ever seen this prompt in an interview.
Total loop was four rounds: system design, two coding, one behavioral. System design was round three. Results came back in about eight days.
