I've been doing a lot of first-round recruiter screens lately as part of my search and the JPMC one stood out as more substantive than average. Wanted to document it here since I couldn't find specifics anywhere.
The screen was 30 minutes with an internal JPMC recruiter (not agency). She introduced herself, confirmed the role and location (hybrid, NYC office), and then got into it.
Here's what she asked:
Background: walk me through your resume, briefly. (standard)
Motivation: why JPMorgan specifically, and why this team? She pushed on the 'why JPMorgan' in a way that felt genuine, not scripted. She mentioned the company has seen a lot of people apply to banking as a fallback in this market and she was probing whether I actually wanted to be there.
Logistics: are you comfortable with hybrid (3 days in office), do you have any hard constraints on start date, and what's your current visa status.
Work style: how do you manage priorities when you have multiple stakeholders asking for different things? This surprised me for a recruiter screen. Not a deep behavioral question, but a light version of one.
Timeline: are you actively interviewing elsewhere? (I said yes, she didn't flinch.)
Comp check: what are your comp expectations for base salary? She asked this directly. I gave a range. She confirmed the role's band was within it without telling me specifics.
The whole thing was pleasant and moved fast. She set clear expectations: OA next if I move forward, then a technical screen, then a virtual onsite. She said she tries to be responsive and gave me her direct email.
One thing I appreciated: she told me the team I'd be joining and what they actually work on. Not all recruiters do that. It let me do real homework before the next round.
