IBM's interview process tends to be longer and more structured than most people expect. For technical roles you're usually looking at 3-5 rounds: an initial recruiter screen, one or two technical assessments (often coding challenges on their own platform or HackerRank), and then a panel of behavioral interviews that IBM calls a 'Job Simulation' or structured behavioral loop depending on the org.
The behavioral piece is where IBM puts real weight. They use a competency-based framework tied to IBM's core values (client focus, innovation, trust). Expect STAR-formatted questions about navigating ambiguity, cross-functional collaboration, and dealing with competing priorities. Questions about working in a large matrixed organization come up a lot because IBM is one.
Levels here map to IBM's banding system (Band 6 through Band 9+ for ICs), and the title inflation can be confusing. A 'Senior Engineer' at IBM Band 7 is not the same as a senior IC at a startup. Worth understanding before you negotiate.
Decision timelines run slow compared to tech startups. Two to four weeks between rounds is normal. Don't read silence as a rejection. One recruiter screen for a consulting-adjacent role can stretch into a 6-week process.
