General Motors interview clinic: a late-change scenario

One of the hardest questions that shows up in General Motors Program Manager, Mechanical Design, and Supply Chain interviews is some version of: “A late change hits right before launch. Walk us through exactly what you do.” What interviewers listen for (especially at GM) Based on candidate reports, GM interviewers commonly probe for governance maturity and launch readiness thinking, not just calm problem solving. Strong signals include: A clear decision and escalation path: who needs to decide, by when, and what input is required. Change control discipline: how the change is documented, assessed, approved, and communicated. Cross-functional impact quantification: manufacturing readiness, supplier lead times, validation testing, quality risk, and schedule critical path. Tradeoff clarity: what you would de-scope, re-sequence, or mitigate, and what you will not compromise. A strong answer structure (use this template) Frame the change in one sentence: what changed, when, and why it matters. Stabilize the situation in 24 hours: freeze scope where needed, align stakeholders, set a single source of truth. Run a rapid impact assessment: schedule and launch gates manufacturing tooling/process readiness supplier capacity and logistics validation and rework/testing needs quality/safety implications Propose options with explicit tradeoffs: at least two paths (for example, implement now vs. defer with containment), with risks and mitigations. Make the decision governable: document the decision, owners, dates, metrics, and follow-ups. Explain how you will track to closure. Quick phrasing you can borrow “I’d treat this as a formal change control event: quantify line exposure, identify critical path impacts, bring cross-functional owners into a time-boxed review, then escalate a decision with options and documented tradeoffs.”

Post your answer (5 to 10 sentences) to the question above, and tell us which role you are targeting at GM so we can give more specific feedback. What would you do in the first 24 hours?
