I've been looking at Genentech for a couple months now and I keep going back and forth on whether to apply. I have a CS degree, some internship experience (one at a health-tech startup, not pharma), and I'm really interested in the mission side of the work.
but honestly I'm not sure if they actually hire new grads into SWE roles or if most of their eng hiring is mid-senior. I've seen a few postings but they disappear fast.
also: what's the timeline? I've heard pharma moves slow. I'm trying to time a few apps and I don't want to be waiting 3 months on one while everything else closes.

they do hire new grads but not at high volume, it's mostly through their university recruiting program and specific rotational programs. if you're applying through the general job board for an explicitly 'Associate SWE' or '0-2 YOE' role that's fine. applying to a mid-level role and hoping they'll consider you is less reliable.
timeline: 4-6 weeks is typical once you're in process, but getting into process can take a few weeks if they're screening high volume. budget for 6-8 weeks total.

health-tech internship is actually relevant context for them, don't undersell it. knowing what HIPAA constraints feel like at the code level, or just having thought about data sensitivity in healthcare, is something they care about. it's not a pharma credential but it's not nothing.
