Interviewing at Epic Systems: What to Know Before You Apply

Primly Team · 0 replies

Epic Systems is the dominant player in electronic health records software, based in Verona, Wisconsin. Nearly every major hospital system in the US runs Epic, which means the work has genuine stakes and a dedicated user base. The company is famously insular and doesn't hire from staffing agencies or contractors. If you get in, you're full-time from day one.

The hiring process typically runs 3-5 weeks. Most roles go through a phone screen, one or two technical or role-specific assessments, and then a full on-site day in Verona (or virtual equivalent). For software developer roles, expect a coding assessment early in the process, often timed and sent before you even speak to a recruiter. The on-site includes technical rounds and a culture/values interview.

Epic's culture is intense. They work long hours, especially in implementation and technical services. The Madison/Verona area cost of living is low, which partly explains the compensation structure. They're loyal to their people but the model is build-from-within, not hire-experienced-leads-from-outside.

Behavioral questions lean hard on collaboration, handling ambiguity, and working with non-technical stakeholders (hospitals are not easy clients). Having concrete examples of cross-functional problem-solving goes a long way.
