Just finished the recruiter phone screen with Discord and figured I'd write it up while it's fresh.
The call was 30 minutes with a senior recruiter on the partnerships and community side (I was applying for a marketing role, not eng). It's genuinely more of a conversation than a screen. She started with the standard "walk me through your background" but the follow-ups were more specific than I expected.
Things she actually asked: Why Discord specifically. Not in a gotcha way, but she probed whether I actually use the product and had opinions on it. If your answer is vague she'll keep pressing. Having a real take helped me. What I was looking for in terms of growth and scope. They're clearly trying to figure out if you're a company-stage fit, not just a role fit. Comp expectations. She asked early. Not in a weird way, just said "better to make sure we're in the same ballpark before going further." I gave a range and she said they could work with it. One question about a specific past project and what my actual contribution was. Not behavioral format exactly, just conversational. But she wanted to hear what I personally did vs. what the team did.
She also spent a few minutes explaining the process: recruiter screen, then a 30-minute hiring manager intro, then a take-home or case exercise (varies by role), then a 2-3 hour virtual onsite with 3-4 people.
Total time from application to screen was about 12 days. Not the fastest but not terrible. I submitted through their careers page.
One thing that tripped me up: she asked what I'd change about Discord's product or go-to-market. I had a weak answer. Be ready for that if you're in a PM, marketing, or strategy role. They genuinely want to know your POV.
Happy to answer specifics. The screen is low-pressure but you should know why you want to work there.
