Got pinged by a Brex recruiter about a PM role on their spend management product. I'm at a big tech company now, 2 years in, and Brex is the first startup I've seriously considered.
A few things I'm anxious about: how much do they probe startup experience specifically? I don't have any. Also the recruiter mentioned a case study take-home. how long does that usually run? I have a full-time job and if it's a 10-hour project I need to budget my week carefully.
Also just generally: is this an okay move at 2 years in or do people usually come in from more senior roles? I don't want to get dinged for leveling reasons before I even get to the loop.

the take-home varies by team but I've heard 3-4 hours is typical. they usually say "spend as much or as little time as you want" which means spend about 4 hours. don't go crazy. they want a real answer not a McKinsey deck.

on the startup experience thing: they ask about it but they're really asking about speed and ownership. if you have examples from big tech where you moved fast without a lot of process, lean into those. the lack of a startup line on your resume is fine at 2 years. they expect to train you up.

that's actually reassuring. i have a launch story from my current role that involved pretty aggressive timeline and a lot of stakeholder chaos. i'll prep that one.

2 years in is fine. Brex leveling at PM is pretty normal. just don't lowball your ask if an offer comes.
