i'm applying for a new grad SWE role. my school taught Java, i've done some Python projects, never really written C++ except one intro class where i basically forgot everything. bloomberg's reputation is so tied to C++ that i'm not sure if i'm just wasting my time applying. the JD doesn't explicitly say C++ required but i've read enough forum posts to feel like it's a soft requirement everywhere there. has anyone done the new grad loop recently with a Java/Python background and actually gotten through?

the C++ thing is real but overstated for new grad roles specifically. teams vary a lot. some are heavy C++ infrastructure, some are Python/Java application teams. the new grad loop doesn't assess C++ syntax, it assesses whether you can learn it. get comfortable with pointers, memory management basics, and you'll be fine showing that knowledge exists even if you're not fluent.

the data/analytics teams definitely use Python heavily. if you're open to those teams you'd be less exposed to the C++ culture. different corner of the company.
