Boston Consulting Group senior engineer compensation 2026: base, equity, and bonus breakdown

Getting this down because BCG's comp is genuinely confusing if you're coming from a standard tech IC track. They don't operate like FAANG. Different structures depending on whether you're in BCG X (their product/engineering unit) vs. embedded in a client service tech role.

BCG X Senior Engineer (NYC, 2026, my offer + one secondhand data point):

Base: $175,000 - $195,000. My offer was $185k.

Bonus: 15-25% target, paid annually, performance-gated. The bonus is real and typically paid but not guaranteed like the consulting bonus structure.

Equity: This is where it gets confusing. BCG X does offer RSUs but the grant sizes are smaller than comparable FAANG senior roles. My offer had roughly $80k in RSUs over 4 years ($20k/yr) which is notably less than a typical FAANG L5-equivalent. Vest schedule was standard 4-year with 1-year cliff.

No sign-on in my offer. I asked. They came back with a $10k relocation stipend since I was moving cities but framed it as non-negotiable to be repaid if I left in under 12 months.

Total comp: around $220-$240k in Year 1 at target bonus. Not FAANG money for a senior eng but competitive with mid-stage startup, better benefits package than most, and BCG name on the resume carries weight depending on where you want to go next.

Caveat: I'm NYC-based. SF numbers were described as running about 8-12% higher based on one convo I had with a recruiter there. Remote wasn't offered for this role.

The equity piece is the real story here. At my last FAANG role a Senior/L5 was clearing $80-100k in annual equity vesting alone. $20k/yr is basically startup-level equity without the startup upside. You're taking a meaningful pay cut from FAANG to go to BCG X, even if the base looks okay on paper.

Worth modeling the full comp including benefits though. What's the 401k match, health coverage cost? That can easily be worth $8-15k/yr and closes some of the gap with startup or smaller tech firms.

How does the leveling work at BCG X? Senior Engineer there -- is that roughly equivalent to L5 at Google, E5 at Meta, or something different? Trying to understand if these numbers are apples-to-apples.

Honestly the leveling is not directly translatable. BCG X 'Senior Engineer' is probably closest to L5/E5 in scope but the expectations around consulting context and stakeholder communication are higher. I wouldn't map it cleanly. If you're already an L6 or Staff somewhere, you might interview into the same title but at a band that feels junior.
